I was beyond excited about the chance to shoot a wedding in California. Once Joy and I pinned down the details of me coming out to photograph her and Frankie’s wedding in LA, I promptly talked to Ben about spending a few extra days after the wedding to explore all that Southern Cali had to offer. Okay… maybe we couldn’t see all it had to offer. But here’s a snapshot at how we spent our three days (and I will be the first to admit. I totally did not take enough pictures).
One day we reserved as a beach day with our friends Karl and Rosa. It was so relaxing and maybe one of the most gorgeous days, weather-wise, that I have ever experienced. Seriously. Malibu is one of those beaches that is tagged as a surfer’s beach. So… our husbands decided, “When in Malibu…” They rented the most giant surfboards known to man and had at it for the first time. A kindly veteran surfer gave them a few pointers and they did pretty well, considering! Meanwhile Rosa and I enjoyed a lovely relaxing time on the beach.
Ben and I also spent a day seeing the LA sights “just to say we did”… We visited The Getty art museum after many recommendations to do so. I love art. I do. But we spent more time outside than actually inside at the exhibits. The views and the sunshine were just amazing.
The Hollywood sign, of course.
And you know, a stroll down the highly overrated Rodeo Drive. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. :) And the City of Angels. In all its glory.
Admittedly my most planned day of our mini-vacation? Our time with my sweet friend Suzy. I met her at the Pursuit 31 conference last year and when I knew we would have some time in LA, I emailed her about doing some portraits for me and Ben. Suzy and her husband, Lukas VanDyke, are talented photographers and I just knew that she would capture great shots of me and Ben with that quintessential California feel. We met in a quaint town called Fillmore and (drove through desert to get there!) and then headed to Ventura. It was so good to see Suzy and such a gift to have our photos done with her. You can see our full blogpost on Lukas and Suzy’s site, here! And for our full gallery you can go here!
These dunes and palms… and that pier. Just the Californian portrait I was hoping for. It’s always good to come home. But you treated us well, California. :)
