on photography, 2011 & Austria

I have some things on my mind and thought, what’s a blog really for if it’s not for sharing thoughts? And, seeing as it is a photography blog, it’s also for sharing pictures. So, I will mix in a few more images from Karl and Rosa’s wedding, which will have nothing to do with the content of this post. But, as I continue to work on those photos I can’t help but find a few more that I love! :) So, enjoy the random smattering of wedding photos throughout my ramblings.

The year is almost coming to an end and it’s been quite a year. I have thought through, talked through, and prayed through quite a bit when it comes to photography. I have been so blessed to be a part of each event I have shared on this blog (and more to come!) and I have really loved learning as I go. I am so thankful for great mentors in my life as well as, honestly, great blogs filled with great info for photogs.

The best thing I did this year as my love for photography grew? Learned to shoot manual. I owned my first Nikon DSLR for 7 months and shot completely on auto mode. To be honest- it was like owning a really nice point & shoot. And that’s fine! But I felt like it wasn’t enough. Especially if I was going to pursue photography in a bigger way. I was hungry for more… and I knew I could do more. I would see a shot in my head and then not get that same image in my camera. Why?!? Where’s my buttery background and crisp exposure? It was locked away in my incomprehension of my camera. My failure to understand my camera limited me and I was so excited to learn more. I started to enjoy photography more because I felt I had more control over my photos. I. love. it. And it is something that I am passionate about and excited to do more of, in the future. That’s the good news. The bad news? My insatiable appetite for all things photography. I traded in my Nikon D5000  with my kit 18-55mm lens (a good little camera) and bought my current love, the Canon 5d Mark II. Best switch-over and best investment ever. But then there are lenses, oh the lenses, and other accessories, and bags… see what I mean? Insatiable! Maybe I will share some of my favorites in another post. :)

So, as this year comes to a close, I am so looking forward to the New Year. I am looking forward to all that the year may bring. And what better way to finish out 2011 and ring in 2012 than a trip to Europe?! I leave today for Austria to visit my dear friend Kristi-Anna and I am so excited. I will be taking so many pictures and hopefully I can update this blog with a few along the way. There will be mountains and cities and Christmas markets… too exciting! :) so stay tuned… I’m off!
